NY Newsday Subtly Threatens Layoffs

NY Newsday employees voted 473 to 10 against the new contract offer of the Cablevision owned company. Newsday's contract with newsroom employees expires, obviously, on April Fool's Day.

But the most ominous line? The subtle threats in Newsday's statement after the vote:

"The objective was to preserve as many jobs as possible and to ensure that Newsday remains a strong and viable company for its workforce, and for Long Island," the statement read in part. "We worked closely with the union to come up with a contract that is fair and equitable given the challenging state of our industry and our business."

Yikes.

Newsday lost $7 million dollars last year. The new contract asked for pay cuts of 10-15%, longer hours, and less vacation time. The Newsday.com 'pay wall' has brought in dozens and dozens of new subscriptions while simultaneously cutting off advertisements to thousands and thousands (not to mention links to articles, etc) of online readers.
