Napoleon is apparently alive and well and working in NY sports radio. In, not on. Deadspin caused a stir when an ex-WFAN intern wrote in to describe the abuse he took while working at 660. Commenters quickly guessed that he was talking about 30-year-old Sal A. Licata of Ronkonkoma and we've had a second ex-WFAN intern write us to say that the commenters were 100% correct.
So I'm sitting there and I happened to be watching a highlight of a Phillies game. The Phillies crushed whoever it was they were playing by 10 runs. I mutter to myself, "The Phillies are gonna steamroll the national league". The guy in question (call him Rob) starts flipping a shit on me. I thought he was going to keel over and have a brain aneurysm from how loud he was yelling at how red he got. He says word for word, "Are you an intern? Sit the fuck down you don't know SHIT about sports you fuckin retard! Steamroll the national league? Are you fucking kidding me? When were you born 1988? Then you clearly no ABSOLUTE SHIT ABOUT SPORTS! Sit your ass down and don't fuckin speak".
Nice. But that is allegedly par for the course at WFAN and it has been going on long before staffers left the Astoria HQ (Photo above). Our tipster writes:
Sal Licata belittles people often. It's as if Mike Francesa's whipping boy transfers his anger at Mike's behavior to interns (and he did have the altercation with the other intern that you cited from Deadspin). He IS a huge douche who is uneducated, lives at home, and has zero upside in broadcasting.
Sal took some classes at Suffolk County Community College. That's it. He's into his 8th year at WFAN now and he still cannot get the show that he wants. 8 years! He lives at home because he makes $30 something thousand dollars. You should have heard him crowing to anyone and everyone about his friggin' $5000 dollar bonus last Christmas. Sal sucks ass.
Interesting. He got a $5k bonus for Christmas. Sal had tweeted us that his bonus check had been inflated 1000% because of WFAN's #1 rating (which simply means they beat 1050 ESPN). So his typical year end bonus is roughly $455 bucks? Wow. That's why he lives at home. And he's probably terribly jealous of John Minko's near 6-figures.
So we pose this question. If someone screamed at you in your corporate setting, "Sit the fuck down you don't know SHIT about sports you fuckin retard!" what would happen? We had the unenviable task of agreeing with morning boy Craig Carton yesterday. Discussing the incident - Carton said no one should be treated like that. No one.
We emailed Mark Chernoff (V/P Sports Programming CBS Radio, V/P Programming CBS Radio New York, WFAN Operations Manager) and asked him if he or a human resources representative wanted to comment on the Deadspin piece. If he replies - we'll print.
We're sure that the Connecticut School of Broadcasting is curious as to whether it needs to consider sending their graduates to intern at Kramerica.

Mark Chernoff is a class act and he will reply to you . Its no secret Sal lives home, he readily admits it, he too often tries to copy The Sports Pope and Sal makes more than 30k, he does weekend shows now .
No, no he is not. Anyone who would let that happen, anyone who would continue to let Mike Francesa lie, anyone who would hire Craig Carton, anyone who would not answer the ADL is not a class act.

Having met Mr. Chernoff and explaining my distaste for Carton to him, I have to agree with bm6894, Chernoff is pure class. I interned at WFAN and observed how the staff there operates. Like any environment, there is a hierarchy. You have those with influence, those who think that they have influence and the peons that get trampled over. It is no different than anywhere else. It is just that it is played out via the media. I will say that at least with me, Sal did nothing but treat me with respect during my internship.
One item that I will note is that there seemed to be a great deal of jealousy directed toward Evan because of his position at such a young age. Add to that the usual sycophancy of people trying to move up the ladder (can you say "Bull") and you have the same behaviors that you would find in the corporate world.
