On Jeter's clutch play, Valentine says he believes the initial throw from the outfield would have got Giambi without the flip. And on the Yankees saying Jeter practiced it, Valentine said "I don't believe it."
“We’ll never practice that,” Valentine said. “I think (Jeter) was out of position. I think the ball gets (Giambi) out if (Jeter) doesn’t touch it, personally. That was amazing that he was there. I bet it’s more amazing that he said he practiced it. I don’t believe it.”
Come on Bobby! You're better than that. Jeter's fall into the stands to rob Boston's Trot Nixon in the 12th inning of a huge midsummer game -- that's the one you want. Dive into the stands? Come on.
He did, however, neuter Alex Rodriguez. Speaking of Jason Varitek's retirement: “And he beat up Alex” referring to Varitek’s famous facial of A-Rod during the 2004 season.
**Update, Bobby has apologized. For the practice comment.

Jeter is a showboat
fart
bobby get a life, Jete is awesome, get over it.
Most MLB players, these days, are nothing but show-offs. They want to impress the kids, BUT, they'll turn around, start cussing, etc., which I'd never want my kid hearing.
So, for Jeter to add a little extra is nothing more than showing off and, I'd expect his contract will demand he keep doing it - for mega-bucks.
The thing that impresses me, is this: When he has a hangnail, he'll be on injured reserve, while raking in megabucks for doing nothing!
Don't think Jeter ever asked for the media to fawn over the made up plays. He makes all the routine ones.
Valentine is an idiot. Bad manager, bad broadcaster. Watch the play. It's a great play. The throw was off line and dying. In any case, what's the point of saying something like that? Boston is going to regret hiring him.
I love when people say that they don't wan't their kids hearing cuss words from Athletes, however these very same parents smoke weed, beat up their spouses, spew obsenities at slow poke drivers and curse out the Yankees on all of their accomplishments! Filthy drunkin BoSux fans need to get a life, incl their temporary Manager!
Talk about wanting attention. Can Valentine keep his mouth shut. Jeter is a respectable guy compared to most players. Valentine needs to look at his own players. I hope he fails just like his other coaching stints.
Didn't take valentine long to become an idiot.
Someone tell Valentine that this is BASEBALL and not pro wrestling. All he has done since being hired as the Bosox Manager is make stupid remarks about the Yankees to try and "build" a rivalry. Newsflash Valentine: That rivalry has been around long before you, and will exist long after you're fired (end of this season).
Jeter is a baseball god. He is one of the few athletes that we can let our kids look up to. My son was a huge Tiger Woods fan and took up golf because of it. You can imagine the let down my 12 year old went through. Jeter is a true role model and a great SS.
Varitek had his mask on during the fight-Alex didnt have that luxury-kinda like manny pushing down zimmer!just shows the mentality of some of the sports teams-the yankees are a fine team(honestly)-boston is too-we are the fans-who cares if they showboat-everyone loves a winner-both these franchises have given so much to so many-be glad we have them-its a win-win for us and the team!go jeter!!!!!
Hey Anonymous, Manny did not push down Zimmer,(he would have killed him) Pedro Martinez did. And Zimmer, former Red Sox manager, mostly fell on his fat face. That whole incident was stupid on both team's part.
Baseball is a sport dominated by ignorance. Bobby V is considered smart by baseball standards. Listening to him during ballgames dispels any possibility that he is smart.
Bobby also craves the spotlight and this is his way of getting attention.
What more perfect target than the best player in the game; one who plays the game the right way night after night after night.
Can't wait for the first time Bobby sells Beckett or Poppi out in the press.
Bobby V is totally full of it. The throw from the outfield would have taken the catcher far to the right of the plate and run would have scored. Jason V was a pure coward, chasing after A-rod with all his catching gear on. He would have never had the guts to go toe to toe without all the protection, facemask included!
Anyone with any instincts at all at any level of baseball, especially as a middle infielder, should make that play if warranted.
Where exactly is a short stop supposed to be on a throw from the right fielder to the catcher? Jeter said that he realized he had no assignment in a play like that so in the spring he practiced going to the first base line in case there was an errant throw.
Jeter also made a great play in the 2000 world series by going out to left field and relaying the throw to catch Timo Perez at home. Perez wasn't running hard with two outs because Valentine didn't feel it was important to stress that to his players. Ever wonder why you don't have a ring, Bobby? Ask Jeter to let you look at one of his five sometime.
Always thought he was an idiot......changing my thinking, much bigger idiot than I thought.
Now Boston stuck with him
I totally agree, the flip was absolutely pointless. He would have been out anyway.
The good ole boy network will never suffer
the ignominious fate of extintion.
Recycling your bad inventory seemingly is
far easier than searching for a fresh commodity.
Poor Red Sox....Team sucks...Manager sucks and has proven he is the dumb*** everybody already knew himto be...By the way, in my opinion, Jeter is one of the few players in MLB who deserves to be recognized for his on field character....
Anyone but the Red Sox! It doesn't need to get any better than Jeter. These players are at the freakish pinnacle of talent and don't need to practice to pull off these plays. (Burle between the legs) These are the same people that think nascar is nothing more than driving around in a circle.
tell harry hollywood to get another face lift !!
Valentine is clown and a fool.
Who plays SS for the Sox? Jeter will no take the bait from such a media hound. Valentine is
baseball smart but he's also a fool
If Giambi SLIDES!!! it makes Jeter look dumb cutting of the throw
A story about a "flip play" without a video showing the flip play or even a description of the flip play. What a waste of time.
Would have been out, could have have been out, might have been out.....wtf!! We'll never know. But what we do know, for 100% sure is, because of an accurate flip, HE WAS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bobby, you are an idiot. That is the first that came to mind. You are a great manager, but an idiot. First, the Jeter flip was necessary. Second, Varitek did not beat up ARod. For some reason, whoever lands the best punch is known as the winner. It is ridiculous! Just manage and keep your mouth shut! We are not talking crap. Francona did not talk crap.
Varitek beat up Alex? Real man Varitek is. He's so tough why didn't he take his catchers mask off. Did he think Alex was going to be stupid enough to punch his lights out while he was still wearing his catcher's mask? So typical of Boston and their media circus. Have another beer!!!
The play was done & over. Valentine should get over it. He should concentrate on doing his job, since the Red Sox need all the help they can get.
Hater,,, just found out he will be facing the YANKS too many times, now he will know what the AL EAST is about,,, don't like it Bobert,,,, LEAVE
Screw Zimmer. Run at me old man and you'll get more than that. You were luck all he did was protect himself, yankee dirt.
If Giambi slides Jeter look dumb cutting off the throw. Dumb.
This guy annoys the crap out of me. Though I am a yankees fan, i respect some red sox players/managers. francona would not have done this. I respected Francona because he did his job, and didn't start up random things. Bobby has been taking shots at everyone since he got the job. The play happened years ago, he's just looking for attention. Jeet is one of the few class act players left.
bobby, you always been a trouble maker even as a player. you sport a bad temper also. that play was one of kind we may never see again. ofcourse derek jeter again. go have a beer, you will need one,,,
