Phil Mushnick Confirms Michael Kay in Trouble at ESPN

We wrote on June 11: "Multiple sources close to the situation at ESPN incidate that there has been strong rumor floating in the Disney owned company that The Michael Kay Show could be gone by early next year."

We followed up the next day after ESPN NY GM Dave Roberts commented:

“It’s totally not true,” Roberts, ESPN New York GM, told FishbowlNY. “Michael Kay is part of a very talented team of hosts.”

He certainly is, currently, part of a team of hosts. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and we’re in this for the long haul,” Roberts said. And the marathon apparently includes the upcoming NFL season.

Our sources said: "Bob - Heard similar about Kay. He keeps blaming his poor numbers on ESPN-NY's limited signal, and no longer can use that excuse.

B) He has this football season to get it right and frankly if he doesnt he should be replaced. Before she commented on our suggestion of Sid Rosenberg: 'Problem with your boy [Sid] is that ESPN probably won't risk being associated with him, a shame actually.'"

Today? Phil Mushnick confirms.

* Words from inside are on the wind that come September, ESPN Radio-NY, ratings-reactive since its move to FM, will add more Stephen A. Smith/Ryan Ruocco, with Kay’s role either diminished or worse.

Mr. Roberts? Your move.
