12 Killed, 50 Injured at The Dark Knight Rises Batman Premiere in Denver

A gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire during a showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Denver today at the Century 16 cinema complex. 50 patrons were injured and at least 12 are dead after the attack in Aurora.

A 24-year-old man was arrested in a car park nearby in possession of a rifle and handgun. He told police that explosives were stored at his home.

*Updated, 12 dead according to police. Not 15. Federal officials have identified the shooter as 24-year-old James Holmes.

More weapons may have been left in the cinema, he said.

"Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire," the police chief said. "The shooting apparently went on for some time."

"Get us some damn gas masks for theater 9, we can't get in it," one officer radioed back to emergency dispatch during the operation, according to an excerpt aired on KUSA.

A witness added that he saw a man "slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing - picking random people." "I'm pretty sure wearing [a] mask. He fired a canister into the air - it could have been a smoke bomb or tear gas," the woman, identified only as Pam, told the BBC. He apparently had entered by kicking in the exit door near the front row.

Audra Mincey, a spokeswoman for the Swedish Medical Center, told Fox News there are two patients in critical condition. University Hospital confirmed to 9NEWS the youngest patient they have in their care is 3 months old.

Jesus. Two apparent witnesses spoke about the attack.
