Nadir Nassry, 47, is accused of leading the convoy and faces two counts of tampering with records, New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa announced yesterday in Trenton. Joseph Ventrella, 28, faces a single count of tampering.
Attorney Charles Sciarra says Nassry denies taping plates, has admitted the escort was a mistake, and has filed to retire.
"I am aware of the negative image and difficulty this escort has caused the Division of State Police," Nassry wrote in a statement. "I deeply regret that this matter has made an already difficult job even harder on my fellow troopers who work so diligently."
Sources indicate Nassry's pension could be at risk.
Commander of Troop B, Major Robert Catullo and his deputy commander Captain Michael Cerisano were reassigned after the incident. Region commander, Capt. Warren Moore was as well.
Cerisano and Catullo retired.
