Colombia’s Lady Andrade Decided to Punch Abby Wambach in the Face

Colombia's Lady Andrade punched Abby Wambach during the first half of the Colombia vs. USA women's soccer match today.

The Guardian continued its peculiar brand of reporting by calling it 'a flying arm.' "For the first time in this women's tournament, there was niggle in the air. Colombia's Lady Andrade was particularly fortunate the referee did not witness a flying arm into the eye of Abby Wambach."

Whoo.

The USA women's football team beat Colombia 3-0. (Maybe Hope Solo should have used this incident to promote her book, you know, instead of blasting Brandi Chastain.)

Was watching this live. Just disgusting. I think Lady disgraced herself as an Olympian and and an athlete and disgraced her nation as well. Aside from it being a totally uncalled for and disgusting play, it was stupid to boot. It was the fist half of the match with COL down only 1-0. She attempted to take out one of the best US players at the risk of being caught and getting red carded and putting COL down a player for the rest of the match. Just a bad play all around.

That's a real shock. Because we all know what a peaceful country Columbia is. The USA women's team was lucky nobody was kidnapped from the field during this match. Or even killed. Because that is how everyday life is in Columbia.

Unknown said...

Sure didn't look like much of a punch. More like a closed fist slap. Rumor has it that Lady thought a dude from the stands had gotten on the field and was trying to stop him.

Dumb, Dumber, Lady Andrade .... by the way she is not a lady ..... Oversized dumb nut instead

I feel that it is Columbia's fault just as much as the players for not booting her from the team. Which in effect condones the act. If the Colombian team does not boot her from the team, then Columbia should be booted from the Olympics and assault charges filed. Stupid idiots don't even know what Olympic sport they are in. Boxing doesn't allow footballs in the ring, and football does not allow boxing in the field. People and countries like that are third world for just this reason. And obviously they deserve to be third world. Someone really needs to catch her outside the stadium and cold cock her and then say 'these things happen'. Then maybe she will realize what she did.

Wow, what a surprise that those with nothing to say but tired, inaccurate tripe about Colombia don't even know how to spell the country's name correctly.
It's actually a pretty great country that's making impressive strides despite its unfortunate and violent past. The people there, on average, are some of the friendliest on Earth. Lady Andrade, despite her awesome name, is just an asshole, which are unfortunately present in every nation. I was hoping the women's soccer team would give Colombia some much-needed good international press. But this did the opposite and she really let her country down today.
I hope she's retroactively reprimanded and I also hope people would think before spewing tired and offensive stereotypes about a nation of which they have no real knowledge.

Anderade drank her haterade and is full of jealousy and bitterness. She is THREATENED, that the U.S. soccer team is BETTER. What a lowlife vulgar creep she is. She should be BANNED from the rest of the Games and send her "flying arm" AND A** home.

To the morons who don't know Colombia. Please take a look at US American history plagued by Holocausts committed agains African Americans and Native Americans. Daily life in the US until l today is filled by terrorists acts committed by young white males against their classmates, be it in Columbine, Colorado or Texas or Aurora, Colorado. Lynchings /racial homicides against African Americans still happen on a regular
basis. Pleae avoid federal buildings in Oklahoma, University towns such as Lubbock, all sites of the occasional massacre, and don't even go to WACo. Texas.

So it is so easy to stereotype if you have never traveled somewhere or lived there, taht is why the rest of the world thinks of Americans as ignorant morons who are loud mouthed.

Mary M. Revis said...

LOL LOL I have to LAUGH at the comment about USA not knowing about Colombia. First of all..this ISN'T about any COUNTRY, it's about a VILE NASTY PLAYER NAMED ANDRADE who is UNSPORTSMAN LIKE, PLAYS DIRTY AND CRIES/WHINES. She is jealous and bitter. Plain and simple. But, if you REALLY want to bring up countries? Hmmm..well..let's not talk about Colombian DRUG LORDS/CARTELS mmmmkay?? Now..who's the moron?

Anonymous said...

You're right, it's not about any country but just look at the comments above and you'll see people making it about nationality. And the comments here are nothing compared to other sites I've read.
Lady Andrade disgraced her nation today. Colombian players were quoted before the Olympics as saying they wanted to prove their country is more than the violent stereotype. But guess what? She did just the opposite. And it makes me angry.
I wrote comment #6, but the other poster is right, the average American has virtually no knowledge about Colombia. Without using the words cocaine/cartel, coffee, or Shakira, I bet the average American couldn't put together a complete sentence about Colombia on their own. And you just proved that point, Mary.

Anonymous said...

Maybe that is because that's what Colombia is known for. How is that our fault?

Anonymous said...

Let's talk about the country for a moment. You want to talk about people not knowing about Colombia? Here's the facts for you....Around one third of the people in Colombia have been affected in some way by the ongoing armed conflict. The FARC is the leading guerilla in Colombia. Those with direct personal experience make up 10% of the population and many others also report suffering a range of serious hardships. Overall, 31% have been affected on a personal level or as a result of the wider consequences of the conflict.[101] During the 1990s, an estimated 35,000 people died as a result of the armed conflict.[102] Trade unions in Colombia are included among the victimized groups with over 2,800 of their members being murdered between 1986 and 2010.[103]
During the first six months of 2011 it is estimated that 98,000 people had to flee their homes due to the internal armed conflict.[104] A total of 3.7 million people have been displaced due to violence between 2000 and 2011.[105]

Anonymous said...

Wow! So their violent past is actually also their present. Huh? And I was wondering why everybody was so harsh on the country. It turns out to be very deserving. Inaccurate stereotypes? Tired, inaccurate tripe about Colombia? Making impressive strides? The people there, on average, are some of the friendliest on earth? Seriously? The facts are posted right there in the comment above. Stop with your nonsense and learn the truth about the country you are unsuccessfully trying to defend.

Why so much hate for Colombia? Why let one woman (who made a poor choice on field) represent all Colombians? SMH That country is amazing; I've visited it last summer. The people were down-to-earth and Colombia is so much more than cocaine and cartels. Ignorance is sad thing to see, including narrow minds...

Anonymous said...

Um, you obviously just copied and pasted that off of wikipedia. I said "on their own", you had to look that up. You even left the footnote numbers in there.
Of course I know there is violence in Colombia. Do you know why? Could you tell me the difference between a guerilla and a paramilitario... without looking it up? Also, the high murder rates, as you mentioned, were in the 1990s. A lot of things have changed since then. I’ve lived in MedellĂn, which if you don't know, was the city that Pablo Escobar infamously controlled until he was killed in '93. Yeah, it was one of the most violent cities on the planet back then. But just last November this blue-eyed gringa walked the streets with her friends in the wee hours of the morning and none of us were ever robbed/stabbed/shot/killed/kidnapped/offered coke, etc. Colombian cities are just like they are in the states: there are places you go and there are ones you avoid if you want to stay safe. There’s crime and gang stuff in the cites, like everywhere else, but the drug war has been pushed into the more rural/jungle areas.
It may interest you to know that some of my Colombian friends expressed fears about visiting me in the US. They were actually afraid of coming here and getting shot because to paraphrase, "everyone has a gun so they could just shoot you if they wanted." For real. I was pretty taken back by that statement. How could a Colombian be afraid to come here? Sure, we have more than our fair share of gun violence, but I would never consider my own country, as a whole, to be flat out dangerous.
But that's the image of Americans people of the world often get of us in the media: we're gun-toting maniacs. Is that fair? Absolutely not. Is it their fault that's what we're known for? No. So, to answer the other commentor’s question, no it's not our fault, but when you don't have a complete/accurate picture and you decide to form strong opinions, you sound like a jerk. You’re not required to learn everything about every country. However, if you make sweeping and inaccurate statements because you’re uninformed, that is your fault.
Does Colombia have problems? Duh. Of course they do. But they’re a resilient people who, again on average, are far more welcoming than we in the USA tend to be. So yes, violence is a part of Colombia, but it’s not all there is. Andrade played dirty, but that doesn’t mean all Colombians are bad people. That’s what I’m objecting to: preconceived notions and the actions of one jerk of a soccer player coloring the identity of an entire nationality of people.

So to the typical American morons who did not understand my post. You may make nasty comments about a Colombian player but the moment you extrapolate and attack a country that you only have heard quotes or facts or have seen in your inane media then you show yourself to be a typical American moron. My point about the USA is that if extend the same type of ignorance based on false misconceptions and 1/2 truths then I can paint your country as the most vile and violent country in the world. Unfortunately your chauvinistic comments represent an ignorant population which has believed its propaganda for centuries. Remember the US has invaded more countries, has destroyed more native societies, has stolen more land by force, consumes more drugs , exports more guns, rifles and violence than any other country in the planet. the land of the bull shit propaganda and its fake democracy: where Blacks/Hispanics and Asian Americans could not participate freely until the late 1960's. The country where anti-miscegenation laws where still in the books until the 1970's. Again , if you want to know about drugs, look at your high schools, yourselves in teh mirrors and your children, you Americans are the most drug addicted society in the world. No wonder you moons rank 27th i teh world in educational achievement by high school graduates.

See, this is what I was trying to avoid. Someone throws out offensive national stereotypes and they get thrown right back and now there's hurt feelings on all sides. Oh, Internet, why do I think you'll ever change?

Anonymous said...

Dear Anonymous-as a Colombian who traveled extensively though your country, who worked there and who paid for two Masters at your universities, I know America is a diverse country and that i can easily misrepresent the US backing up my facts with all kinds of statistics but the truth is that once in a while the chauvinism and jingoism of your compatriots is repulsive. What could have been a comment about a player becomes an attack on a whole country, why are United States' citizens so insecure? There are not hurt feelings on my side. Thanks

Anonymous said...

I agree. Because of our vast size and wealth, I think it's easy for many here to forget there's an even bigger world outside our borders. Believe me, I find the rhetoric you're speaking of to be just as repulsive as you do. You know, I can't even remember the last time I heard the word "jingoism". Unfortunately, for some here that's just another word for discourse. America's pretty fortunate, and as a nation we've done some pretty amazing things. I think all of us here could agree to that. So what's with the posturing? Putting other nations down does not make up for our own shortcomings. And for what it's worth, I absolutely recognize that's the fault of both the US government's policies on drugs and our public's appetite for them that are to blame of much of Colombia's (and increasingly, Mexico's) problems. The US often has a profound impact on the rest of the world in many ways, and that's one I'm not particularity proud of.

But, all of that aside, I'm glad you enjoyed your time in my country, as I truly loved my time in yours. And I'm super proud of the US women for the victory. I also hope one day the Colombian women's team will find success, without the burden of unsportsmanlike individuals like Andrade.

I'm an American who has travelled extensively in Colombia. Great country, great people. Colombians, in my experience, are extraordinarily gracious and generous, and Colombia is a stunningly beautiful country.

The match got chippy and Lady Andrade took a pretty wicked cheap shot on Abby Wambach. Whatever happened in the game prior to that point, there is simply no way to excuse punching another player in the face. And there is no doubt that that is what happened. Wambach had every right to be pissed off, and I'm sure the IOC will review the event. Andrade will almost assuredly be red-carded, and we should all move on.

None of this changes the fact that Colombia is a great country and a great culture, and it doesn't change the fact that America is a great country with a kick-ass women's soccer team.

Anonymous said...

Andrade is a dirty cheapshotter, she lied about it afterwards. She ran up to Wambach, jumped up in the air and threw a right across her body. There's no way it was an accident. She was trying to intimidate because her team was getting dominated in everything related to football. She should be ejected for the rest of the Olympics.

Nice to see what your media says about America. And yet... More Colombians come here than anywhere else. As for the racist slur against White Americans, well, your jealousy is showing. Strange, since we spent so much money helping you crawl out of the dark ages back in the nineties. You're welcome, btw.

It sounds to me like you are the jealous ones. We are free to do what we wish. We can do drugs, kill people, or just live the American dream like the majority of us do. And unlike people of Colombia, we do not need to live in fear. This is about a unwarranted, unnnecessary, intentionally violent act commited by "Lady" Andrade of the Columbian women's futbol squad. Her team and country need to do the right thing: remove her from the squad, send her home, and severely discipline her. Columbia should not wait for FIFA to act. Columbia must show that they do not condone such behaviour in sport, especially at the Olympics.

America does not help any countries, it looks to exploit them. Ignorant Americans, wake up. Stop doing so much cocaine and smoking dope, you helped cause the drug violence in Colombia. The American Dream, please wake up!!! It does not exist, you are beginning to rot in a declining society, if you want to see new construction, airorts, highways, please go to Singapore, China or Brazil. LOL!!!! tell you what we do not fear in Colombia, getting killed in our own high schools- the violence is restricted to rural parts of the country. AMERICAN JUNKIES- please get informed, get a real education, stop watching your stupid media and believing everything it tells you. AMERICA- you are teh FRENCH o f the world.\,. that is why China and japan are preferred in Latin America.
Your country never helps out, it seks to destroy and control other societies.
BY the way, the majority of you morons are deeply in debt and are not living the American Dream. High unemployment, living at home, doing drugs (yes- biggest drug market in the world) and no prospects for a better future. YOU ARE A SOCIETY IN DECLINE! Go sniff another line!

Wait, so it's okay for an athelete or an olympian to use violence in a game because of their history or "that's all they know "mentality? Come on! You are in olympics beause you are the best in the country. Olympics is a huge deal because for some, it maybe once in a life time opportunity. Where is Lady Andrade's pride and dignity for herself and the team. The team doesnt deserve this. Sad this happened but what do you teach the kids who were watching this game? Its ok to have unsportsmanship behavior and still be able to play and go to olympics? That's bunch of bs. Do the right thing for once, Columbia! Let her go.
