Silly Brits Think Romney Jab at London's Olympic Prep a 'Stunning Blunder'

Brian Williams asked Mitt Romney what he thought of London's Olympic preparations so far in an interview for NBC today. Romney replied, "You know, it's hard to know just how well it will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting, the stories about the private security firm not having enough people, supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials, that obviously is not something which is encouraging. Because there are three parts that makes Games successful."

The Guardian's Nicholas Watt, Hélène Mulholland, and Owen Gibson, thinking Americans would be stunned by his honesty, write:

Mitt Romney handed Barack Obama a priceless gift for the US presidential election campaign when the presumptive Republican nominee blundered on his first diplomatic outing by questioning whether London was capable of staging a successful Olympic Games.

Yeah, no. Sorry Nicholas, Hélène, and Owen. We are quite capable of pointing out Mitt's flaws -- but when the man who rescued the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002 makes a statement that echoes what former Navy Seal Brandon Webb warned about the 2012 Games...we're going to tend to not think of that as shocking and be left speechless.

"London is as ready as any city has ever been in the history of the Olympic Games," London mayor Boris Johnson boasted.

Let's hope so.
