The 2012 NY Marathon has been canceled for Sunday

Fox Business Network's Senior Correspondent Charles Gasparino tweeted earlier: 'Wall street execs say nyc marathon CANCELLED'

Subsequently, Tribune/LA Times DC Bureau reporter Mike Memoli also said it was canceled.

Finally, NBC New York confirmed -- the NY Marathon has been canceled for Sunday.

Mayor Bloomberg and the New York Road Runners have now issued a press release:

“While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the New York Road Runners said in a joint statement. “The marathon has always brought our city together and inspired us with stories of courage and determination,” they wrote. “We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it.”

It took a while, but they got it right.
