Shocking revelation: Stony Brook paid shock jock Craig Carton a lot of $$ for an appearance

ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION No. 242 -- STATE OF NEW JERSEY 211th LEGISLATURE INTRODUCED FEBRUARY 7, 2005 by Assemblyman WILFREDO CARABALLO District 29 (Essex and Union) 'Censured radio talk show host Craig Carton and holds him accountable.'

An Assembly Resolution censuring radio talk show host Craig Carton for his insensitive and disrespectful comments, and holding him accountable.

An Assembly Resolution censuring radio talk show host Craig Carton for his insensitive and disrespectful comments, and holding him accountable.

Whereas, Craig Carton is a radio talk show host of an afternoon talk show called "The Jersey Guys" on radio station WKXW-FM, also known as "New Jersey 101.5"; and
Whereas, Mr. Carton seeks to use the radio talk show as a platform for discussing topical and political subjects but seems to be better known for his exceedingly insensitive and tasteless comments that have earned him the dubious title of an aspiring radio station "shock jock"; and
WhereasMr. Carton's recent comments concerning the problem of "postpartum depression" have gained him even greater infamy and have brought dishonor upon himself and his station for his false and highly offensive statements about women suffering from "postpartum depression"; and
Whereas, Contrary to Mr. Carton's assertions, leading mental health authorities recognize that "postpartum depression" may be caused by a combination of factors including changes in hormonal levels, stressful events during or after childbirth, the types of birthing practices used, maternal age and lack of appropriate social support networks; and
Whereas, "Postpartum depression" is considered the most common complication of pregnancy, affecting up to 80 percent of new mothers in the mildest form, and affecting up to 20 percent of new mothers in the more serious forms which are characterized by a debilitating type of depression lasting for many months or for a year or more in some cases; and
Whereas, Mr. Carton's misinformed comments not only do a great disservice to women generally but also demonstrate a great lack of respect for the efforts of Acting Governor Richard J. Codey and his wife, Mary Jo Codey, who have expended much time and effort to raise the public's awareness of mental health issues such as "postpartum depression" and have led the way toward removal of the negative stigma associated with these conditions in order to encourage those suffering from problems such as "postpartum depression" to seek out treatment; and
Whereas, Newspaper editorials and citizens throughout the State have roundly criticized Mr. Carton and have agreed that his comments represent a new low even in the frequently irreverent world of radio talk shows, and that Mr. Carton must be censured and held accountable for his comments; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. This House censures Craig Carton for his cruel and insensitive comments concerning the problem of "postpartum depression" and for his tasteless and disrespectful comments directed toward Acting Governor Richard J. Codey, his wife, Mary Jo Codey and to women throughout the State.

    2. Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the General Manager of radio station WKXW-FM.

STATEMENT

This resolution censures Craig Carton, a radio talk show host on radio station WKXW-FM, also known as "New Jersey 101.5," for his cruel, insensitive and highly offensive comments concerning "postpartum" depression and directed toward Acting Governor Richard J. Codey, his wife, Mary Jo Codey and to women throughout the State.

Makes the fact that Carton was paid 'big bucks' to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the Island FCU Arena opener on Friday, Nov. 14 2014 when the Stony Brook University (a public sea-grant and space-grant research university) men's basketball team hosted Columbia all the more shocking.
