Daily News cuts 50% of staff & now...raising daily price 50%

Keith J. Kelly reports:

After chopping half the people in the Daily News newsroom on Monday, parent company Tronc is now planning to hike the price of the daily paper by 50 percent starting Aug. 6.

“Makes sense I guess,” said one insider sarcastically. “Why cut circulation when you can just let circulation cut itself?”

The daily price will jump to $1.50 from $1. The price of the Sunday paper will also jump 50 cents, to $2.

The News paid daily circulation was only 164,472 in the first quarter, according to the Alliance for Audited Media.

Readers were quick to note that the lack of reporters and editors has produced immediate bad results: Tuesday’s home-delivered editions had no mention of the Yankees Monday night game in Tampa Bay. Later editions carried only an AP wire story.

On Wednesday, the paper tweeted a picture of once-missing but now found MTV VJ Jesse Camp holding a copy of a book entitled, “Dolphin F–ker.”

The offensive photo was later deleted.

“Nobody was trying to sneak in ‘Dolphin F–ker,’ ” said one insider. “It was an honest oversight that would have been caught by a social media editor — had there been any remaining.” The entire social media team was pink-slipped on Monday.

You didn't buy it then you certainly ain't buying it now.
