USTA denied filmakers use of Serena Williams' 2009 US Open outburst video and now they're being sued

Director Maiken Baird and writer Michelle Major, along with VSW Productions, have released a film titled Venus and Serena about the Williams sisters that has the collective panties of the United States Tennis Association in a bunch. Why? Because the duo used film (including Serena's "I swear to God I feel like taking this fucking ball and shoving it down your fucking mouth." threat during the 2009 US Open) that the USTA had told them they couldn't use. So, we head to court.

“The USTA declined [the] request to include certain footage which the USTA determined was not in the best interest of the sport,” according to the complaint.

The suit filed Friday in White Plains federal court seeks a permanent injunction against “Venus and Serena,” which opened last month in limited release. The film was expected to air on Showtime, but yesterday the pay-TV channel said it is in “discussions with the filmmakers and their representations about this film.”

The USTA contends that broadcast journalists Maiken Baird and Michelle Major, along with VSW Productions, included footage that “the USTA made clear it would not license for use in the film.”

“What is the USTA afraid of? We’re shocked by this shameful effort to interfere with telling the story of the two most iconic female athletes in American history — a film that they have supported and collaborated on for years,” Baird and Major said in a statement.

The Post reports that "the filmmakers have the support of one sister. Serena, who, speaking last month at the New York premiere of the movie, called it “a really great film” and said the producers were “wonderful.”

"Venus reportedly withdrew her support because of the way it portrayed her father, Richard Williams, as a playboy."

Post Does a Nice Job of Supporting Miss Utah, Ripping Ashley Judd

In Miss Utah Marissa Powell Proposes Creating Education Better yesterday, we wrote, "Sorry, nervous just watching that segment." Today, the Post goes a step further in Miss USA’s big miss:

Here’s what Miss Utah was asked: “A recent report shows that in 40 percent of American families with children, women are the primary earners, yet they continue to earn less than men. What does this say about society?”

We’re not sure what this says about society, but it sure says something about the Miss Universe Organization that oversees the competition. We would refer them to the Web site for the Independent Women’s Forum, where there’s a terrific new video called “Straight Talk About the Wage Gap.”

It points out that when differences in education levels, in the fields of work, in hours worked and choices about family are factored in, the so-called wage gap largely disappears. It points out, too, that “younger, college-educated women in urban areas actually out-earn their male counterparts.”

So by all means, let’s all indulge our feelings of superiority toward a 21-year-old model. But what of the geniuses whose question sounds like it came straight from Ashley Judd’s Twitter feed?
