Electric Cars can Pack 44 Pounds of Slave Derived Cobalt into their Batteries

EV batteries can have up to 20 kg of Co in each 100 kilowatt-hour (kWh) pack. Right now, Co can make up to 20% of the weight of the cathode in lithium ion EV batteries. The top two cars for cobalt use as of 2018 are the Tesla Model X 100D and the Tesla Model S 100D - 100 kWh.

There are really two issues with the widespread use of cobalt in batteries: there isn’t nearly enough cobalt being mined to meet the production goals of EV companies like Tesla and the cobalt we do have is being mined by child slaves in warlord-controlled regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
