Joe Paterno Statue Taken Down at Penn State

A dozen hardhats and a forklift...and the Joe Paterno statue is finally down at Penn State.

Penn State President Rodney Erickson issued a statement:

Throughout Penn State, the two most visible memorials to Coach Paterno are the statue at Beaver Stadium and the Paterno Library. The future of these two landmarks has been the topic of heated debate and many messages have been received in various University offices, including my own. We have heard from numerous segments of the Penn State community and others, many of whom have differing opinions. These are particularly important decisions when considering things that memorialize such a revered figure.

I now believe that, contrary to its original intention, Coach Paterno's statue has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing in our University and beyond. For that reason, I have decided that it is in the best interest of our university and public safety to remove the statue and store it in a secure location. I believe that, were it to remain, the statue will be a recurring wound to the multitude of individuals across the nation and beyond who have been the victims of child abuse.

On the other hand, the Paterno Library symbolizes the substantial and lasting contributions to the academic life and educational excellence that the Paterno family has made to Penn State University. The library remains a tribute to Joe and Sue Paterno's commitment to Penn State's student body and academic success, and it highlights the positive impacts Coach Paterno had on the University. Thus I feel strongly that the library's name should remain unchanged.

Later, workers removed the Joe Pa quote (The one that read 'They ask me what I'd like written about me when I'm gone. I hope they write I made Penn State a better place, not just that I was a good football coach.') as well as several plaques and the metal players that were 'following' him --- followed him out one last time.

Melt the statue and make a new one. 3 Penn State monkeys. See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.

for all you paterno fans, I hope you recover and go on but the last thing Penn State needed to do was keep the reminder up in face of the people.

to bad our congress could not do the right things when they should do the right thing.

it is a rare thing to see things done right but this time the right thing was done. you football lovers will be ok and you will recover from your addiction to a coach. Football and youth go together like a hand in a glove. Make less mess about the croach and help the youth and football both become a thing that they and it should be. CLEAN

A single incident of molestation during youth leads to a lifetime of pain. And I'm talking a 'simple' one-time naughty touch. This coach let a child rapist run amok on his campus all the while negotiating million dollar contracts for himself. Actually he probablye let a child rapist run amok on his campus so he could negotiate million dollar contracts for himself.

Disgusting men. Disgusting executives. NCAA, what are you waiting for? Put PSU out of its misery for itself.

NCAA President Mark Emmert is holding a press conference announcing “unprecedented” penalties to the Penn State University football program and the school as a whole (which it is) tomorrow at 9 AM.

Thank God someone decreed that JoPA is no longer a Deity, and took down the symbol of a cover-up for a serial pedophile; I love the comments made on this report. What makes me sad is that there was a huge debate over whether this statue should have come down, and hearing about people sobbing as it came down. Oh, Happy Valley, when will you learn that preseving your football is not worth sacrificing the welfare of children?

Wold like to see how one of these idiots upset over the statue come down would react to news that a family member of theirs was raped on Penn State showers.

You are Penn State.

Ooops, I see that I made a mistake when I wrote that JoPa is no longer a Deity (at Penn State). His name has not been removed from the Penn State Library. Well, at least they renamed "Paternoville." Makes my skin crawl.

Crying?! There's idiot kids crying over this? Bend over.

Hmm, I wonder if PSU will tear down the bulding JoePa helped them build or just cut the family a check next ..

JoePA was an old man who made a very very bad mistake. What scares me more is no many people knew about this and were convinced to say its a resolved before hand.

My heart goes out to the family and all others who feel pain. Because its not just this situation but a reminder this could be going, or has gone on in other places.

The statue I dare say is only a spinkle upon the cone.

Some people are howling. And they have a right to. But when good people follow because they are lead down a path blindfolded having them burn in hell is not the path of healing or being forgiven.

"lead down a path blindfolded having them burn in hell is not the path of healing or being forgiven."

If one leaves this earth unrepentant it is too late for forgiveness.

Joe Pa has a press box in hell.

$60 million will sound like pennies when the lawsuits and legal bills are done. Think billions.

PSU students, PA residents be ready for a big ole tax increase.

Was Joe cremated? This statue should be.
