Would Stoudemire's teardrop facial tattoo make him a target in prison?

Amar'e Stoudemire was sporting a new teardrop tattoo on his face in memory of his recently killed brother. Years ago a teardrop tat represented prison time, the participation in a murder, or the death of a gang member. Rappers and others in pop-culture (Lil Wayne has a few) perverted the symbol by getting them outside of prison.

But the Urban Dictionary's #1 take on the act is a bit more ominous:

Problems arose when men on the outside began to get the tattoos and brag that it signified their killing someone or [that they] lost a loved one. Unwittingly they had marked themselves as a target for predators if they ever went to prison.

And you don't want the full historical tract back to Australian prisons.

Rabbis disagree on how bad it is if you get tatted.
