UPDATE -- TMZ confirms: Junior Seau is dead of apparent suicide

TMZ reports that the coroner has been called to Junior Seau's Oceanside, CA home but that they cannot confirm reports that the ex-NFL great is dead. A possible shooting, and they now confirm that he is dead. TMZ writes:

We spoke with an investigator in the coroner's office .. who told us they got a call to respond to the scene ... though the details surrounding the situation are still unclear.

People in law enforcement are telling us Junior Seau is dead ... but we are unable to confirm that right now.

Update, NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and cops are investigating a shooting ... multiple law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

Seau was a member of the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team and a ten-time All-Pro and 12-time Pro Bowl selection. He played with the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots.

Kristina Davis of U~T San Diego reports 'A 911 call reporting a possible suicide was made to police at 10 a.m., a dispatcher said.'

Sports Illustrated's Lee Jenkins' tweets 'Seau is the eighth member of the Chargers '94 Super Bowl team to pass.' Maggie Hendricks adds, "If Seau committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest, it is similar to the way former Chicago Bears great Dave Duerson ended his life."

San Diego Chargers released a statement: "Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now...We ask everyone to stop what they're doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family."

In 2010, Seau drove his SUV off a cliff and sustained injuries just hours after leaving jail on domestic abuse charges. Witnesses said he was "driving about 70 miles per hour and made no attempt to brake or slow down."

Family members, including Junior's mom, gathered at the scene. “I don’t understand,” she said. “I don’t know anything, why this happened. I am shocked. I appreciate everybody showing your love. Showing your love to my son.” “Monday, Tuesday, me and my husband went to visit him,” she said. “He was out of town. He was talking to me. He was joking to me. He know I heard a bad voice on Wednesday morning.”

"Take me, not my son."
