Bree McMahon was working a car wash fundraiser for her high school soccer team two and a half years ago. Another player got into a SUV and hit the gas instead of the brakes...pinning Bree against the wall.
Her legs were crushed.
McMahon underwent 8 operations (18 total to date) over 32 days in the hospital. She lost her left leg and doctos didn' hold out much hope for her right. Miraculously, she regained its use later down the line.
Bree picked up the phone one day and it was U.S. Olympic star Mia Hamm. "You're my hero," she told Hamm. "No, you're my hero," Hamm told Bree. And with that, McMahon set goals. And she's hit them all.
Fast forward to 2012. In the final game of the spring exhibition season at Brevard College in North Carolina, McMahon played 25 minutes as a reserve goalkeeper. She allowed no goals and made one save in a 2-1 victory against Catawba College.
ESPN's always excellent Outside the Lines tells her story.
