Michael Phelps butterflys to 17th Olympic gold medal

Michael Phelps beat South Africa's Chad le Clos and Russia's Evgeny Korotyshkin (who finished with identical times) by 0.23 seconds today to win the 100-meter butterfly and his 17th career gold medal. Phelps's time was 51.21 seconds.

"I didn't have a good finish, didn't have a good turn," he said. "But, you know what, I'm not going to nit-pick my races right now. I'm just happy to be able to defend that title. All of my 100 flys have have been within two-tenths of a second.

And with that, he may swim off into the sunset. We'd say that's a pretty good finish.

"It's a good way to finish my last individual swim ever. To be able to win it is pretty special," he added.

Indeed.
