AAP says Cheerleaders Need Safety Rules, Proper Conditioning (Video)

Bowling is a sport. Golf is a sport. Fishing is a sport. How the hell is there still a debate over whether or not cheer-leading is a sport? Finally, the American Academy of Pediatrics has said that chearleading is a dangerous activity that should be called 'sport' within schools and with that designation they need to be subjected to all the safety requirements that go with other team sports.

Recognizing cheerleading as an official sport -- only about half of state high school athletic associations currently do -- would afford participants with additional protections such as access to athletic trainers and medical staff, quality training facilities and coaches, preseason strength and conditioning programs, and mandated preseason physicals.

Cheerleading accounted for 65.2 percent of high school and 70.5 percent of college catastrophic injuries among all female sports during 2007-2008. It's about time the participants were protected, no?
