The Hal Steinbrenner said some stuff. So, Page 6 got into the mix with anonymous sources claiming A) Arod is motivated by the talk and B) A-rod doesn't need that type of negativity. He needs support from the team.
Yes, in the very same piece:
A source close to the Yankees tell us Rodriguez was hurt by Cashman’s comment to ESPN that he “couldn’t live up to” his 10-year, $275 million deal and, “Hopefully he can return to being at the very least an above-average player.”
The source with the team in Tampa, where Rodriguez is undergoing daily rehabilitation and has been cleared to resume baseball activities, tells us, “Alex is hurt by the comments but is determined to prove his general manager wrong.
Rodriguez, 37, underwent hip surgery in January, and, the source continued, “It’s a tough injury to overcome, but he is focused on making a strong comeback.
“No player wants to remain on the bench. He has been working hard on his daily rehab and his diet. The target is for Alex to return after the All-Star game in July, and he believes he can do it.”
A sports agent who asked not to be named told us, “This negative talk by the Yankees could be seen as a signal they want to get out of their contract with A-Rod, but that is not going to happen.
“It’s curious that the GM is saying this when what Alex probably needs right now is less uncertainty and more confidence. And the team could use it, too.”
