Another reason the show works is the dramatic tension between Hyneman and Savage. If after close observation you have deduced these two stars don’t like each other much, you would be correct. During their 20-year relationship, the two have never eaten dinner alone together.
“We seriously irritate each other and don’t want to spend any time together,” Hyneman says. “And yet we have a profound respect for the partnership. We’re like a couple of dogs with a rag. That conflict is an effective tool in teasing apart that problem we’re trying to solve. We can wrestle with a problem until something breaks free.”
