The Mets will pay a portion of Strawberry's owed taxes...because of course Darryl is still on the payroll

The NY Mets will pay a portion of Darryl Strawberry's 1989, 1990, 2003 and 2004 owed taxes...because of course they will.

Next month, the Internal Revenue Service will auction off the remaining annuity from the deferred compensation on Darryl Strawberry’s contract, a six-year deal the former outfielder signed with the Mets in 1984.

The contract, which ran from 1985 to 1990, was worth $7.1 million, but nearly 40 percent of his $1.8 million team option in 1990 was deferred and placed into an annuity with a 5.1 percent annual interest rate.

The winning bidder will earn the right to collect approximately $1.28 million from Sterling Mets L.P., which is the parent company of the Mets and of which Fred Wilpon is the CEO. The money will be paid in 223 monthly installments, and the winning bid — which cannot be less than $550,000 — has to be approved by a judge before the sale becomes final.
