MM followed up that non-story with the bigger sourced headline, NY Jets coach Rex Ryan would welcome firing if Gang Green fails to make over offense qualified with a disclaimer: "It’s unlikely that Johnson would fire Ryan, who has two years and more than $6 million remaining on his contract." He also used the old trick of confirming a non-confirmation: "However, sources told The News that Ryan has not been given assurances about his job security three days before the season finale against the Bills on Sunday."
That technique is standard Mike Francesa. In fact, Francesa spent much of the afternoon spewing that "he's heard" that no vote of confidence has been given to Ryan or any other member of the Jets coaching staff. And then, following Ryan's presser in which he called Mehta's report 'garbage' (of which Manish live tweeted, frequently referring to the exclusive as a 'NYDN report' ... only once using the pronoun 'I') -- WFAN served Peter Schwartz up to Francesa for the explicit reason of allowing the Pope to 'out' Pettine as Mehta's go to source. Over and over and over again.
Look at me! Look at me...and then name the last time someone in sports media outed someone as a source.
