Down 40-38 with four seconds left, BDS had to go the length of the court. Grant Norder launched the ball to the half court line where Chris Rohr went up and caught it and, without landing - passed it to to Riley for the shot.
“We’re screening for the middle and one of our taller guys is supposed to tip it out,” Tegtmeier said. “It’s designed to just try and get a shot off and it doesn’t have a high probability of working, but luckily in this tournament it worked for us. I didn’t think it was going in, but it did.”
“I didn’t have much time to celebrate because Cody (Garland) came in and tackled me pretty quick,” Tegtmeier added. “Everyone was on me and it was just so unreal. I still can’t believe it.”
BDS Coach Fred Kluck said even when they run that particular play in practice against no defense, it only works about once out of every five times.
“We usually practice it with two seconds left on the clock and we’re looking for a tip rather than a catch,” Kluck said. “With four seconds, we knew we could catch it and get a few dribbles in and maybe get all the way to the bucket. But I was glad he hit a three pointer and it ended it because (Freeman) is so good on defense, it would have been hard in overtime.”
And now, we have the unbelievable video.
41 - 40.
