Alaska HS with 24 students beats Goliath on Greg Bennum Jr.'s 3/4 court buzzer beater

Sitka, AK -- The Kake High School JV Thunderbirds had just seen a Mt. Edgecumbe three pointer tie them at 50-50 with 6 seconds left. (This after a blowout loss to the same Braves the night before to boot.)

Kake's Greg Bennum Jr. took the inbounds pass and let it fly from 3/4 court. Tlingit Reign was there.

Bam.

What makes the win all the more incredible is, Kake HS has all of 24 students. Total. (Mt. Edgecumbe had almost as many students as Kake has residents...) The Tlingit village population has dwindled with the loss of logging jobs, said superintendent Kevin Shipley, and proposed cuts to the state ferry schedule could force the school to alter sports travel plans in the future.

The Thunderbirds down the Braves 53-50 and then they headed to McDonald's, a small schools tradition when visiting hub cities.

“It took awhile for the boys to get to sleep, all that rush of adrenaline," Kake head coach Anthony Ross added.

Indeed.
