Official Video Tribute: Trenton Thunder Batdog Chase Dead at 13

The Trenton Thunder's team bat dog, Chase, has passed away at age 13 after a battle with cancer and arthritis.

(TRENTON, NJ) - It is with great sadness that the Trenton Thunder pass along news that 13-year-old team bat dog, Chase That Golden Thunder, passed away on Monday.

Chase made his debut with the Thunder in 2002 and went on to entertain millions of fans at ARM & HAMMER Park. He was also a fixture in the local community, visiting schools and special events throughout the region. Chase was seen worldwide on CNN and Japanese television, nationally on ESPN, FOX and the YES Network as well as numerous local television stations. He appeared in Sports Illustrated, newspapers all over the country, and is in the July 2013 issue of Yankees Magazine. Last month, Chase became the first dog to be honored on the field at Yankee Stadium, following a special invitation by General Manager Brian Cashman.

Chase's death comes just three days after a celebration of his life at ARM & HAMMER Park in what was his Birthday and official Retirement Party.

"Chase was such a tremendous part of the Trenton Thunder identity for more than 10 years," said Thunder General Manager Will Smith. "His presence at ARM & HAMMER Park or in the community was the epitome of the wholesome family entertainment for which we strive. Our ball players, staff, season ticket holders and all the men, women and children who he entertained and interacted with over the past decade will miss him dearly."

Chase leaves behind a legacy of bat-fetching Golden Retrievers as two of his sons, Derby with the Thunder and Ollie with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, have followed in their father's paw steps.

Fans wishing to offer their condolences are asked to refrain from sending flowers or material objects to the Trenton Thunder. Instead, the team urges fans to make a monetary donation in his name to Trenton Thunder Charities or a local animal shelter/pet rescue in their own community.

Right up there with Kris Richards, no?

Minor League Team Holding 'Steve Bartman' Night

They just won't let it go:

Wednesday the Miami-affiliated Grasshoppers are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Marlins' 2003 World Championship season. Jack McKeon, that squad's cigar chomping skipper, will be on hand to throw out the first pitch and 50 bobbleheads in his likeness will be given away as well. But here's where things get a little strange -- the Grasshoppers are also staging a tribute to Steve Bartman, the Cubs fan who inadvertently gave the Marlins a new lease on life when he interfered with a foul ball during Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS.

Grasshoppers director of production Shawn Russell writes that a staff member will dress in Bartman's trademark glasses, hat and headphones get-up and "ruin" or "interfere" with many of the evening's on-field promotions.

Nationals Single A player Kevin Keyes hit a home run, broke lights in the outfield

Roy Hobbs drove a ball into the lights for the game and pennant winning home run in The Natural. The lights exploded and rained down on the field as Hobbs ran the bases. Potomac Nationals first baseman Kevin Keyes' 4th inning, two run HR off Carolina Mudcats pitcher Shawn Morimando yesterday wasn't as big a hit (it was responsible for the eventual game winning runs) - but he did hit and break the lights out in left field.

And the video is no longer embeddable. (And it never had sound.)

The home run went an estimated 450 feet.

Minor League SS Hernan Perez flipped off a base runner

Hernan Perez, Erie SeaWolves shortstop [Eastern League Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers], flipped off the lead Bowie Baysox runner yesterday on this nifty little play.

"It was a SportsCenter highlight type of play," said [Erie manager Chris] Cron about Perez's play. "He made a play that I'm not sure I've ever seen."

Right up there with these five guys who caught foul balls and didn't spill their beers.....

Wow also works. Jason Repko of the Triple A Pawtucket Red Sox robbed former major leaguer and current Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee Kosuke Fukudome of a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning before 10,286 fans at McCoy Stadium last night.

Nobody tagged up...
